Tip 1: Decide whether you prefer posed or candid photography
The first thing you should know about how to photograph newborns is that there are two styles – lifestyle and posed or studio shooting.
Posed or studio shooting. If you and your clients decide to use such newborn photo ideas, keep in mind that the best time to photograph newborns is within the first two weeks of birth. The infant will be drowsy and “foldable.”
Lifestyle shooting. This is a more relaxed approach to recreating newborn photography ideas. Of course, there will be some posing, but the main goal of this type of photography is to capture natural and lively images of the baby and his or her surroundings.
As for me, I try to maximize the benefits of both types of newborn photography. For example, if you’re working on a studio shoot, you can take some lifestyle shots during your breaks. Do not squander your time. Even the feeding process provides an excellent opportunity to capture some memorable images.
Tip No. 2: Don’t Forget About Preparation
One of the best baby photography tips is to make a list of everything you’ll need for the shoot. You can bet there will be a lot of items, so start packing the night before.
Baby Photography Packing List:
- Main and backup camera
- Lenses
- Memory cards
- Stand for background and clamps
- Beanbag for the newborn
- Some funny toys if there’s a toddler in the shoot
- Space heater
- Various props (pillows, blankets, wraps)
- Big blankets for the backdrop
- Smaller swaddle blankets
- Waterproof pads
- A change of clothes (in case of some accidents)
Tip 3. Warn The Clients
It is critical to ensure that the parents of the baby are aware of what to expect and how to prepare for a successful newborn photo session in order to plan a successful photo session with newborn photo ideas. You could even send them a letter with some advice and newborn photoshoot ideas to get them both ready. There are even email templates that include a detailed description of the session’s plans as well as a clear preparation guide. Inform your clients about the items you’ll be bringing with you, the approximate duration of the shoot, and ask them to warm the house even though you’ll be carrying a space heater.

Tip 4. Become Inspired by the Baby
Inspiration can be found almost anywhere. You can look through Pinterest for newborn photo ideas and ask your client to send you a letter with their own baby photoshoot ideas. It’s a great way to practice some poses before you start shooting.
You don’t have to come up with some out-of-the-box baby photoshoot ideas to capture beautiful and touching images. Allow the newborn to stretch, yawn, move, and perform other wonderful and endearing movements.
In addition to all the newborn photography posing tips, I would recommend you open up the baby’s fists. Take into account that relaxed hands will add a more quiet and peaceful atmosphere to the shots.
Tip 5. Keep Your Aperture in Mind
Consider that many poses in newborn baby photography may have different extreme angles, and an aperture of f/2 or f/2.2 will allow you to get a better depth of field and sharpness.
Tip 6. Take Advantage of Sleepy Time to Shoot Macro Pictures
Macro photos are another example of newborn photo ideas. Take close-up shots of the baby’s fingers, toes, lips, hairs, and so on as soon as he or she falls asleep.
In addition to looking very cute and adorable, such “detailed” baby photo ideas will be ideal for the newborn’s photo album. Because the focus on the macro lens is very sensitive, the best time to take newborn photos in macro mode is when they are very still (time of their deepest sleep is ideal).
Tip 7. Do Your Best to Take the Shot of Mom and Baby Together
If you’re a mother, you know how difficult it is to get in front of the camera while also knowing how important it is. Taking a photo of the baby and his or her mother is thus one of the best newborn photo ideas.
Tip 8. Use Your Props Reasonably
Many new and experienced photographers bring all of their props (headbands, blankets, wraps, etc.) to every photo shoot, which is their biggest mistake. Even if you have a lot of newborn photo ideas to implement, a large number of props can cause you to become confused, panic, and waste time. It is preferable to consider and plan three to four baby girl or baby boy picture ideas, depending on the client’s preferences.
Tip 9. Use Natural Light
When considering baby picture ideas at home, you should pay close attention to natural light during the photoshoot. It will add a calming tone to the images and create a peaceful atmosphere. In the morning and late evening, you can use natural light from the windows. There is also some advice on the settings in addition to the newborn photography tips. Select the AV (Aperture Priority) mode and a large aperture with a high ISO.
Tip 10. Dress Up the Baby
It is an excellent example of baby girl pictures ideas. You should try your hardest to capture the most memorable shots, because time is so precious, and only you can help parents create vivid memories.
Tip 11. Select Pastel Tones to Make the Baby Shine
When picking out clothes, props for the baby, and other baby boy or baby girl photo ideas, try to stick to similar colors and tones to avoid drawing attention away from the newborn. If you have problems with lighting, it is best to wear light-colored clothing. You can also try to come up with unique newborn photo ideas by incorporating textured props, such as a knit blanket. If you have additional blankets, you can certainly use them as a background, as they will look very nice and neat.
Tip 12. Shoot From the Top
It is critical to consider the baby’s safety and to use the camera strap during the shoot to avoid dropping the camera. If you want to shoot from above, try to angle the frame so that you are shooting down the child’s nose. If you decide to take newborn photos with the baby on a surface, keep the camera at eye level.
Tip 13. Pictures with Siblings Are Amazing
You may frequently encounter a situation in which the baby has older siblings. In such cases, you have an excellent opportunity to implement even more interesting newborn photo ideas. The only thing you should keep in mind is that the best time to take newborn photos with his or her brother or sister is immediately after you begin shooting.
Tip 14. Hire an Assistant to Make the Shooting Easier
Taking newborn baby photos is not as simple as it may appear. Babies are unpredictable: they may start crying or move during the shoot, causing the props to be ruined, and so on. Finding an assistant is a wise decision. He or she can prepare the baby for the shoot, organize your props, hold the flash, or deal with the newborn in order to capture the perfect moment.
Tip 15. Remember About Safety During the Newborn Shooting
Whatever type of baby girl or baby boy photos ideas you want to recreate, keep in mind that the newborn is in charge. If he/she still won’t sleep after you’ve tried everything, just accept it and shoot some lifestyle photos.
In general, I hope that these newborn photoshoot ideas and tips will be useful for you and help you take candid and unforgettable baby pictures.
Tip 16. Share the Portfolio with Your Community
Once you practice newborn photography and you are satisfied with your work, you have to show people your vision. How can you do that? Firstly, you should build a website to display your niche. Lucky for you, WordPress is the perfect match for photographers – give it a try!
