11 Christmas Photo Ideas to Cheer Up Your 2021
Christmas is quickly approaching, which means it’s time for holiday photoshoots. If you’re reading this, you probably enjoy this time of year and want to capture the best images possible.
You can add a Christmas atmosphere to your photographs, no matter what genre you specialize in, to make them look extra special. If you’re not sure where to begin, our unique Christmas photo ideas can help.
Capture Candid Family Photos
Family portraits can be difficult to capture, especially when children are present. While it is possible to take beautiful group photos, it is not something you should feel obligated to do at every family gathering. Consider the alternative: candid photographs. (You might be interested in taking posed candid photos as well.)
Posing for candid photography is less stressful than posing for posed photography. It is not necessary for your subjects to look directly into your lens. In fact, the goal of this genre is for your models to be completely unaware of your presence. They should be completely immersed in their own worlds so that you can capture their genuine expressions and movements.
How are you going to master this? Autofocus is a good place to start if you’re new to photography. Make sure nothing is in the way of your lens focusing on the correct subject. Manual focus is a good option if you’re looking for a challenge. The more you use it, the easier it will be to take consistently sharp and clear photos.
Use Christmas Lights in the Dark
Christmas lights are the ideal artificial light source for creative Christmas photography. You can use them to take photos of your family, self-portraits, and close-ups of your Christmas decorations. They transform into a completely different tool in the dark. In the dark, string lights are ideal for taking moody photos with a festive twist.
Make a record of the baking or cooking process
Many people associate Christmas with spending quality time with friends and family. If you want to document this special time in your life, keep in mind that you don’t have to focus solely on people. Often, it’s the small details that make the biggest difference in a photography portfolio (or a Christmas photography card!)
Baking/cooking is a good place to start because it is unavoidable at most family gatherings. Be inventive. Take artistic photographs of food and the processes that go into making it so beautiful. Play around with different angles and layouts. Take photos directly above a table or from a low angle. This exercise will also help you improve your food photography skills, which is a nice added bonus!

Photograph Snow Decorations
Many traditional Christmas photos show decorations inside. This is a fantastic idea, but it can be enhanced with the addition of snow! If you live in a snowy area in December, you can take very festive photos of Christmas decorations outside.
All you have to do is decorate a lovely tree in the snow. This idea requires only garlands, wreaths, and a few small ornaments. You can decorate a tree and take photos with your family in front of it. (This would make an excellent family Christmas card photograph!) Alternatively, you can photograph the ornaments on the tree in close-up. The snow will add a nice atmosphere to your photos and give them a genuine wintery feel.
Take Cute Christmas Photos of Children and Pets Using Random Props
Christmastime brings a plethora of interesting and reasonably priced props. Some, like lovely gift boxes, appear to have only one purpose. However, from the perspective of a photographer, they can be very useful props for children and pet photoshoots.
Assume you have a medium-sized gift box that looks fantastic on camera. When you put that in front of a white backdrop (which can be a white wall), you get something that resembles a studio! Put a baby or a puppy in there (safely) and you’ve got everything you need for an adorable photo shoot. You can add fake snow, Christmas decorations, or mistletoe to this. As you can see, a successful Christmas shoot does not necessitate a large budget.
Take Creative Christmas Bokeh Photos with Lens Filters
Lens filters are a lot of fun to use, especially when you have a lot of lights to work with. On sunny days, some lens filters are used to darken landscapes. Others, known as bokeh filters, are used for more creative purposes, such as transforming bokeh into hearts or stars. You can order custom filters to create bokeh in the shape of ghosts, letters, or even animals. These types of lens filters are typically inexpensive.
Because you most likely have a lot of Christmas lights around the house, it’s safe to say that your bokeh filter will not go to waste in December. It can be used to make backgrounds more interesting or to photograph bokeh on its own. (For the record, Christmas photo ideas with props are usually great for family Christmas cards.)
Make Your Own Christmas Fantasy World with Miniature Props
Christmastime is usually accompanied by a plethora of adorable miniatures. You can use these figurines to practise taking various types of photographs. You can take macro photos of small objects that represent what this time of year means to you (bonus points if you can create bokeh in the background!). Still life photography has a lot of possibilities, and it’s a great way to hone your technical skills as a photographer.
This is a great place to start if you want to get your kids interested in photography. Because children enjoy playing with toys, you can use this to introduce them to photography in a fun way. Children frequently have very creative ideas, so be open to collaborating with them and taking memorable photographs together.
Re-Create Old Family Photos
If you have old family photos from the holidays, you can use them as inspiration for a new family photoshoot. You can make your photos look more modern or as old as your references. Using different props or a completely different setup could be the modern twist. You can also change the way the photos are edited. (Instead of using faded colours, boost the saturation of your images.)
If you don’t have any old Christmas photos, you can start a new tradition in your home. Take a photo that you will be able to recreate every year from now on. This is a long-term photography project that has the potential to make the holiday season even more enjoyable than it already is!
Incorporate Christmas Colors Into Your Photos
Red, green, gold, and white are traditional Christmas colours. Because they complement each other so well, red and green are especially important. They’re also easy to come by this time of year, especially indoors. A red-decorated Christmas tree. A green gift box topped with a red bow. Despite their simplicity, these colours can help you instantly create a Christmas atmosphere no matter where you go.
If you don’t want to go overboard with these colours, use them in small doses. If you want to take a festive self-portrait, for example, you don’t have to sit next to your Christmas tree in every shot. Using simple objects such as decorations, tinsel, or Christmas lights, you can subtly incorporate a few key colours into your portrait.
What to Wear to Your Christmas Photoshoot
Wear the appropriate attire for your Christmas card photos to make them extra festive. It’s fine if you don’t like ugly Christmas sweaters. (They look pretty cool in photos, in my opinion, but to each their own!) By making a few simple changes to your everyday look, you can look both comfortable and fashionable.
You can dress casually. Sweaters and sweatpants are excellent choices for comfortable indoor photos. If you want to go for a more formal look, try incorporating Christmas colours into your outfit. Here are a few suggestions:
A red sweater or turtleneck with jeans
A burgundy sweater with a grey blazer
A black dress with red shoes
A very simple outfit with a Santa hat! (If you’re rushing and don’t have any other ideas.)
Ideas On Where to Take Christmas Photos
The location is also an important aspect of Christmas photography. You might find it easier to take great photos of anything if you choose the right location for your photo shoot, whether it’s your family or still life.
In Your Living Room
If it’s too cold to go outside, you can still take some stunning photos indoors. This includes group family photos, still life shots, and a variety of other things. You may benefit from using a wide-angle lens with a full-frame camera for the best results. This allows you to take wide and atmospheric photos, which is useful in confined spaces. However, keep in mind that this isn’t a requirement and that you can take fantastic photos with the equipment you already own.
The majority of people place their Christmas trees in their living rooms. As a result, in any light condition, this is one of the best places to take photos. If the light isn’t flattering, use a reflector or another source of light. It could be a lamp or a torch.
In a Location With Untouched Snow
Avoid taking photos in congested areas where the snow is dirty and wet. Look for a simple location with fresh snow. You may have to travel outside of your town or city to find it, but the effort will be worthwhile. Untouched snow looks great in Christmas photos and is an excellent backdrop for any genre. This is the place to go if you want to make your annual Christmas card stand out.
Summary
These Christmas photo ideas will not set you back a fortune or require you to stand outside in the cold for hours. They are simple, but they can assist you in taking photos that are cosy, memorable, and creative.
Some of these ideas may require you to step outside of your comfort zone. Why not start specialising in portrait photography now, if you don’t already? Take pictures of your family members for fun. Take out a few figurines and practise your close-up photography skills if you’ve never tried still life photography. (You can even do this with your smartphone.)
Allow this holiday season to be a fresh start for you, both creatively and personally.
