The best drones available in 2021
For the longest time, the most obvious recommendation for the best drone was one of DJI’s Mavic drones. That trend continues today, with several Mavic drones ranking among the top ten best drones on the market. On Drone Rush, we go over the ins and outs of many drones, but today we’ll just focus on the best of the best for you.If you’re ready to take to the skies, let’s take a moment to find the right drone for you. You might want a toy to play with at home, a racer to take to the track, or a fantastic camera drone to capture photos and video from the sky. All of those tasks can be handled by a drone or two.
Best drones you should buy today:

DJI Mavic 3 Cine
Best camera drone
The DJI Mavic 3 is a significant upgrade to the Mavic drone series. The compact, folding design is retained, but you now have a dual-camera setup, with a 20MP Micro Four Thirds camera capable of shooting up to 5.1K video and a smaller 1/2-inch camera capable of up to 28x zoom. We are particularly impressed by the new flight time, which allows pilots to spend up to 46 minutes in the air.
The Mavic 3 standard comes with 8GB of internal storage, while the Mavic 3 Cine comes with a 1TB internal SSD and the new DJI RC Pro remote control. The Mavic 3 Cine has fast enough storage with the SSD to capture video in the Apple ProRes 422 HQ format, and the RC Pro has an HDMI port to enable external recorders or live production tasks with this powerful new drone.
This fantastic Mavic drone comes with an atypical Mavic price tag. The DJI Mavic 3 standard is $2,199, get the DJI Mavic 3 Fly More combo for $2,999, and the DJI Mavic 3 Cine is $4,999.
DJI Mavic 3 features:
- Release date: November 2021
- Flight time: 46 minutes
- Camera: 20MP 5.1K Micro Four Thirds and 28X zoom 12MP 1/2-inch
- Top speed: 43 mph

DJI Inspire 2 with Xenmuse X7 camera
Best professional and camera drone
The best professional camera drones allow you to fly your professional camera in the sky. They are simply vehicles for what would otherwise be a handheld camera to fly. The DJI Inspire 2 is an alternative that comes with its own set of cameras. The Zenmuse X7 is currently the best on the market. This is a high-resolution camera with interchangeable lenses. I did say 6K video capture. The 24MP Super 35 sensor supports 6K CinemaDNG, 5.2K Apple ProRes, and other formats. If I kept going down the camera’s spec sheet, you’d think I was talking about a high-end DSLR, which is exactly my point.
The DJI Inspire 2 is simple to operate on its own. It handles and operates similarly to the majority of other DJI drones. The best way to operate it, however, is with two pilots, one controlling the craft and the other controlling the camera. It can travel at nearly 60mph, stay in the air for nearly half an hour, and is one of the more capable video livestream drones available, making it ideal for a news crew.
The best of the best comes at a cost: the DJI Inspire 2 costs $2,999 for a basic flight package without a camera. You’re looking at around $3,100 for the camera, $1,200 for each lens, or a $6,249 combo with the Inspire 2 and Zenmuse X7 camera. The sky is the limit for the Inspire 2 packages, as it is for these drones. DJI even offers an Inspire 2 Premium package for $14,460, but you’ll still need to add some accessories if you want it all.
DJI Inspire 2 features:
- Release date: 2016
- Flight time: 27 minutes
- Camera: Interchangeable – Best: 6K – 30fps, 24MP Super 35 Sensor
- Top speed: 58 mph
DJI Mavic 2 Pro
Best camera drone under $2,000
The DJI Mavic 2 Pro, which was released in August 2018, is one of the best camera drones DJI has ever created. Given DJI’s reputation in the industry, we believe the Mavic 2 Pro is one of the best camera drones on the market, period. The Mavic 2 series includes the Mavic 2 Zoom and the Mavic 2 Pro, which only differ in their cameras. The Zoom model has a 2x optical zoom from its 1/2.3-inch camera sensor, while the Pro model has a full 1-inch Hasselblad sensor.
Some high-end camera blogs have complained that the Mavic 2 Pro cannot produce the same high-quality photos and videos as a “proper” Hasselblad camera. All I got out of it was that the camera on this drone is good enough to compete with cameras that cost thousands of dollars. It’s not quite as good as those high-end machines, but it’s still quite good.
In terms of performance, the Mavic 2 Pro is one of the fastest, most stable, and agile camera-focused drones we’ve flown. It’s also one of the safest drones we’ve flown due to the multi-directional obstacle avoidance sensors. Don’t be fooled by the name; even a novice can successfully launch the Mavic 2 Pro into the sky. It has a wide range of self-piloted flight modes to help you get the best shots. Experienced pilots, on the other hand, can take manual control of the craft and really push the camera to new heights.
Check out the DJI Mavic 2 Pro for $1,449, or a $1,849 combo with the Fly More kit. For $323, you can get extra batteries, accessories, and more with the Mavic 2 Fly More Kit. If the Mavic 2 Zoom for $1,245 is more your speed, go for it. (Please keep in mind that prices on Amazon may be higher than the initial launch prices for this drone.)
DJI Mavic 2 Pro features:
- Release date: 2018
- Flight time: 31 minutes
- Camera: 4K – 30fps, 20MP
- Top speed: 44 mph
Skydio 2
Best self-flying drone
The Skydio 2, the successor to the powerful Skydio R1, is possibly the most advanced self-flying drone available on the consumer market. The Skydio 2’s powerful processing, combined with all-direction obstacle avoidance sensors and pathing AI, allows it to navigate places where most drones would either avoid or crash. A solid drone experience is rounded out by 4K video recording and a decent flight time.
Hubsan H111 features:
- Release date: 2019
- Flight time: 23 minutes
- Camera: 4K – 60fps
- Top speed: 36 mph
DJI Air 2S
Best 5.4K camera drone
The DJI Air 2S, which debuted in April 2021, was a welcome upgrade to a popular series of drones. Not just an update to the previous Mavic Air and Mavic Air 2, but a completely new look for the Mavic line. The Air 2S is equipped with a 20MP camera with a 1-inch sensor. This is the first time we’ve seen a camera of this size on a drone of this size and price. The camera can shoot up to 5.4K video, has an 8X zoom, a 7.5 mile connectivity range, and all new flight features borrowed from the Osmo Pocket cameras.
While there are better camera drones and more affordable craft for just flying around, the DJI Air 2S is our pick for the best drone for the average pilot. The camera is excellent, the drone has enough of the best flight features to be worthwhile, and the drone is small enough to consider packing on a trip.
DJI Air 2S features:
- Release date: 2021
- Flight time: 31 minutes
- Camera: 5.4K – 30fps, 4K – 60fps, 20MP
- Top speed: 42.5 mph
DJI Mini 2
Best compact camera drone
The DJI Mini 2 will be released in the fall of 2020 as a powerful update to last year’s Mavic Mini. The newer Mini 2, which is nearly identical in form and function, has an updated 4K camera, a vastly improved video data rate, more powerful motors, and Ocusync connectivity. The updates result in a faster, stronger mini drone that can fly further, take better photos, shoot much better videos, and stay airborne for longer periods of time.
The DJI Mini 2 is priced at $449. For $599, you can upgrade to the DJI Mini 2 Fly More combo, which includes extra batteries, a charging hub, propeller guards, and other accessories.
DJI Mavic Mini 2 features:
- Release date: 2020
- Flight time: 31 minutes
- Camera: 4K, 12MP
- Top speed: 36 mph
DJI FPV
Best cross-over camera-racing drone
DJI began 2021 with a new machine that slightly reimagines how you fly. To be fair, the DJI FPV isn’t particularly novel, other than the fact that it combines the best of a camera drone with the thrill of a racing drone. Controlling the machine is as simple as if it were a camera drone: go to sport mode to get a taste of what it’s like to fly a racing drone, then go full manual to truly master this new machine. To add to the excitement, the DJI FPV can reach speeds of up to 87 mph, comes with the DJI FPV Goggles V2, a VR headset, and an optional new one-handed Motion Controller.
The DJI FPV is priced at $1299. The Fly More kit is an inexpensive way to obtain extra batteries, and the Motion Controller is an additional $199.
DJI FPV features:
Release date: 2021
Flight time: 20 minutes
Camera: 4K, 12MP
Top speed: 87 mph
DJI Mavic Mini
Most affordable camera drone
The DJI Mavic Mini, which was released in the fall of 2019, is so small that it does not need to be registered in many countries. It is exempt from FAA registration because it weighs 249 grammes, or 0.548 pounds; however, it is still a drone, and you must follow the rules in the sky. Despite its small size, the Mavic Mini includes a 3-axis stabilised 12MP, 2.7K camera, a thirty-minute flight time, and GPS-enabled flight features like RTH and more. If you want to take smartphone-quality photos from the sky, the Mavic Mini is one of the best options available today.
The DJI Mavic Mini is only $399. For $499, you can upgrade to the DJI Mavic Mini Fly More combo, which includes extra batteries, a charging hub, propeller guards, and other accessories.
DJI Mavic Mini features:
- Release date: 2019
- Flight time: 30 minutes
- Camera: 2.7K, 12MP
- Top speed: 29 mph
Syma X5C-1
Best toy drone, a resilient trainer
We believe that any aspiring drone pilot should begin with a drone like the Syma X5C. This toy-class drone has limited functionality, but the piloting experience is comparable to that of more expensive drones. Flying this machine will help you master the fundamentals of flight, such as knowing which way is up and when to press the video record button during a flight. Crashing is almost unavoidable, but would you rather learn how to deal with them on a machine worth hundreds or even thousands of dollars, or on a resilient and entertaining Syma X5C?
Syma X5C features:
- Release date: 2015
- Flight time: 10 minutes
- Camera: 720p
- Top speed: 11 mph
Hubsan H111
Best Nano drone for flying indoors
There is no single category for small drones, but any machine that can fit in the palm of your hand is considered a nano drone. The Hubsan H111 is one of our absolute favourites. We like Hubsan as a brand, and we have many of their larger drones in various categories on the site, but the H111 is one of the easiest to get your hands on, and one of the safest to fly indoors.
Make no mistake about it: this is a toy drone. It has a short battery life and limited flight capabilities when compared to more advanced machines, but it lives on my desk and is used frequently. It’s challenging enough to hone my piloting skills while also being a lot of fun. It’s also reasonably priced, making it an excellent gift.
Hubsan H111 features:
- Release date: 2014
- Flight time: 5 minutes
- Camera: No camera
- Top speed: 7 mph
Special note
Our list today is intended to help you on your drone journey. The truth is that the very best of the best drones start at more than $150,000. There are many great drones on the market, and we hope you will forgive us for making our list today reflect the best machines you should consider if you have a reasonable consumer-electronics budget.
