HOW MANY PHOTOS CAN 16GB/32GB/64GB/128GB/256GB MEMORY CARD HOLD
If you recently purchased a digital camera, you will be looking for a memory card for it. Memory cards are used differently by different cameras. It includes SD cards, CF cards, micro SD cards, XQD cards, and so on. However, they are available in the same standard capacities such as 32GB, 64GB, 128GB, and so on. So, how many photos can a memory card with a capacity of 16 GB, 32 GB, 64 GB, or 128 GB hold?
I’m sure you’re curious about the number of photos that these memory cards can store. It will assist you in determining what memory card capacity is best for you. As a result, you can order the appropriate card capacity. This article will provide the answer to this question.
I’m not interested in 1 GB, 2 GB, 4 GB, or 8 GB memory cards because they’re too small for any purpose. Memory cards with these capacities will also be more expensive.
Factors Deciding the Number of Photos in a Memory Card
Several factors influence the number of photos that can be stored on a memory card. I’ll go over each of these elements.
1. Storage Image Format
The image file format that you will use inside the camera is the most important consideration. In the case of a simple point-and-shoot digital camera, the only option is “JPEG.”
If you have a DSLR/mirrorless/medium format camera, you will be able to record images in RAW format. Professional photographers, as well as amateur photographers, use the RAW format. It allows you to fine-tune camera parameters such as white balance and exposure during editing. For RAW files, each manufacturer will have its own file naming convention.
When using interchangeable lens cameras, you will have several options for saving the images. You have the option of recording the photos in JPEG, RAW, or JPEG+RAW. As a result, the number of images that can be stored is determined by this choice.
2. Camera Megapixels
Another consideration is the number of megapixels on a camera. Due to the increased resolution of a higher megapixel camera, image files will be larger in size. As a result, a single image file will take up more space. As a result, you can only store a few images. As a result, you must ensure that you purchase a memory card with a larger capacity.
A 12-megapixel camera, for example, can only store half as many photos as a 6-megapixel camera with the same memory card capacity.
3. Number of Bits
JPEG files will contain 8 bits of data.
The RAW file will have a bit depth of 12 to 16 bits. As a result, RAW files contain more information and thus take up more space than JPEG files.
I’ll use the following information to calculate the number of pictures that can be stored on memory cards of various capacities.
These calculations for the number of photos versus memory card capacity apply to all memory card types. It supports SD cards, XQD cards, CF cards, C Fast cards, micro SD cards, and other media.
The memory on a 1 GB storage media will be 1024 MB. So, theoretically, a 16 GB memory card will have 16 x 1024 MB = 16384 MB. If you look at the actual storage capacity of the memory card in your camera or computer, it will be less than 16 GB. The actual memory card capacity will also differ between the cards.
The most common capacity preferred by the majority of people is 32 GB. As a result, you can easily find a 32 GB card for a lower price on websites such as Amazon.
